The BioTech Commercialization Project is headed up by the West Michigan Science & Technology Initiative and includes Spectrum Health, Grand Valley State University, Van Andel Institute, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and Michigan Medical P.C.. WMSTI provides one-stop shopping to take ideas that originate in clinical and research settings through the product development process.
In one instance, an oncology surgeon had an idea for a device he could use in performing surgical procedures. In another, a doctor designed a doorway that uses a maze corridor and sensors to prevent radiation from a TomoTherapy machine and other equipment used to treat cancer patients from getting out of the room. The design is now the subject of an application filed this year with the U.S. Patent Office – the first such application that involved a Grand Rapids consortium dedicated to commercializing innovations.
We’ve leveled the playing field. What we want to do is have the best ideas rise to the surface.
